HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WORKOUT?

Have you been working out for a long time and haven’t noticed significant gains yet? It’s probably because you are either over-training or under-training. Now, let’s answer your question, “how often should you workout?”. Well, you should work EVERY MUSCLE GROUP at least twice a week. Read that again … every muscle group should be trained at least twice a week. 

Ok, now that you know that, the second question question that is probably on your mind is, how many days a week should you train. Well amigo, that is going to depend on the kind of workout split that you follow but the recommended rate is at least 5 days per week. Now that you know this, the question that I have for you is, do you have the time to train 5 days a week?

Well, time is an important factor to consider as you begin and/or progress in your workout journey. Some people genuinely do not have the time to train 5 days a week because they are occupied with a lot of things outside the gym. If you can relate to this, here are three things that you can do.

1.  SELECT A PREFERRED WORKOUT SPLIT

It is important to select a workout split that will allow you to hit each muscle group at least twice a week. The common workout splits are the body part split, upper-lower training, push/pull /legs (PPL) and full body workout. An example of a split that is best suited for beginners and busy people is the upper-lower training. It allows for 3 days of rest and 4 days of training. Compound exercises should be utilized for this split to ensure various muscle groups are trained in one exercise.

2.  DEVISE A WORKOUT PLAN OR ROUTINE

Having a set workout routine allows you to walk into the gym with a plan on hand. More so, it ensures that your time in the gym is used efficiently. The last thing you want to be is the guy that walks into the gym without any idea of the exercise he is going to do first. It is advised to have your workout routine written down on paper, if you are beginner.

3.  PRIORITIZE YOUR WORKOUT TIME

If you do not make your training a priority, you will find it really difficult to maintain consistency. Having a set time to workout is essential to keep you on the right path towards your fitness goal. The best thing you can do to yourself is to set a time, whether its half an hour or an hour, to workout and when you are approaching that time, drop or stop whatever you are doing and go workout. Doing this will help you prioritize a good and healthy lifestyle, which is what we all want, right?!
